San Francisco County Car Accidents

Car accidents are happening more and more frequently as California’s roads and highways become increasingly congested. Despite cars cutting edge safety features and advanced technology, thousands of drivers are seriously injured and killed in car accidents every year. California ranks number one nationwide in fatal car accidents, with more than 4,000 deaths each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Car accident fatalities and injuries can forever change the lives of victims and their families. The San Francisco County traffic accident attorneys at Estey Bomberger sympathize with the challenges our clients face and can provide unparalleled legal advice and support through this difficult time.

Types of Car Accidents

Rear-end collision
Rear end collisions happen when one car hits the vehicle in front of them, usually because the first car did not brake in time to avoid hitting the second car.

Side-impact (t-bone) collision
A side impact collision, also known as a t-bone or broadside collision, occurs when a car hits the side of another vehicle. Side impact collisions are the result of, among many other things, negligent driving maneuvers. A driver running a stoplight or making an unsafe left hand turn can cause a side impact collision. The NHTSA reports that almost 30 percent of all car accidents are side impact collisions.

Head-on collision
A head on collision is where the front ends of two cars hit each other. A head-on collision can also describe one car hitting a stationary object from the front end. A vehicle entering the wrong way on a freeway, driveway or one-way street can cause a head on collision.

Rollover
Rollover accidents occur when a car flips over onto its side or roof. Taller vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, are more likely to be involved in a rollover accident because their center of gravity is farther from the ground, making them less stable in an impact caused by a head-on collision, side impact or rear end collision.

Runoff
Runoff crashes describe an accident caused by a car running off the road. Runoff crashes typically involve only one car and happen for many reasons including a driver who swerves off the road to avoid hitting another vehicle or an animal on the road. City and state government agencies have installed guardrails as a tool to help prevent runoff crashes.

Hit-and-run collision
A hit-and-run collision describes a car accident where a driver crashes into another vehicle (or a pedestrian) and fails to stop and identify him or herself afterwards. Fleeing the scene of a car accident after hitting another vehicle or a pedestrian is in direct violation of California Vehicle Code § 20001, which states that the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.

Causes of a San Francisco County Car Accident

Driver negligence is the most common cause of a car accident. Falling asleep at the wheel, speeding excessively, or driving under the influence are all examples of a driver disregarding the safety of others. Distracted driving is also a major cause of car accidents. Talking or texting on a cell phone, fidgeting with the stereo, eating, conversations with another passenger and applying makeup can easily divert a driver’s attention from the road. Other causes of San Francisco County car accidents include poor road conditions, vehicle defects and bad weather conditions.

Car Accident Injuries

Car accident injuries can include head injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, bone fracture injuries, coma, cuts, abrasions, lacerations, sprains, whiplash, dislocation and death. In addition to physical injuries, a car accident victim may suffer from emotional injuries such as posttraumatic stress disorder or acute stress disorder.
